Visitor Services Position - Musquodoboit Harbour Railway Museum

The Musquodoboit Harbour Railway Museum is currently seeking applications for our Visitor Services position. The position runs from June 21st to August 31st. Due to funding requirements for this position, candidates must be a graduating student from high school and enrolled in full-time college or university studies prior to, and after, the work term, or a returning student to university or college, and must be under the age of 30.

Visitor Services Position Description

Visitor Services staff are the face of our museum. Responsibilities include welcoming visitors, giving directions and recommendations about local tourist activities, receiving donations, reception duties, recording visitor statistics, coordination of promotional activities and special events, interpretation of museum exhibits, conducting guided tours, generally providing an enhanced visitor experience, and other duties as required.

Visitor Services staff will also assist with maintaining and stocking gift shop displays, maintaining an inventory, taking special requests, retail sales, and displaying and maintaining inventory for resale products. They will maintain and operate cash registers for admissions, pass, and retail sales, ensuring that cash handling procedures are completed in adherence to policies and procedures. Visitor Services staff will also be responsible for answering the museum's main telephone line and passing messages on to the appropriate staff or board member.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have at least one season of related experience, preferably in a museum setting.

You will also possess the following: Previous retail experience Experience with cash handling, POS, and inventory control systems; Demonstrated excellence in organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and, Knowledge of local events, lodgings, and other tourist information. An interest in the history of the Eastern Shore is an asset.

Other assets include training or certification in tourism, hospitality, retail, and/or museum studies, certification in first aid and WHMIS, and the ability to speak French or German.
